translated from Spanish: Mario Rozas leaves Carabineros and Piñera said he had the “greatest appreciation, admiration and gratitude” for his work

President Sebastián Piñera reported that this morning he accepted the resignation of Carabineros’ managing general, Mario Rozas, after the events in Talcahuano on Thursday afternoon, where two minors from a Sename residence were shot in the middle of a police procedure.
“He has given me his resignation from office and given me his reasons and arguments. I share and have accepted your resignation. I have the greatest appreciation, admiration and gratitude for the work that General Rozas has done, a whole life dedicated to the service of Carabineros,” the Representative said.
“It was his turn to lead at an extraordinarily difficult and complex time,” Piñera said.
The President also reported that he appointed General Ricardo Yañez to replace Rozas, of whom the President said that he “assumes command and will have to carry out the duties of the managing general, and we have commissioned him to promote with total commitment and will the modernization of Carabineros”.
Piñera also said he wished Rozas “a very good life” and expressed shows of solidarity with the minors injured in the incident and also with the carabinieri who participated in the event.
Requests for Rozas to leave office boomed after the social outburst. However, in the face of the government’s refusal, he continued to lead Carabineros, generating a series of questions on the part of the opposition.
His name was again criticized after the Pío Nono case, where in addition to the trucker’s stoppage he triggered the constitutional accusation against the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, and by the way, voices emerged that again called for the resignation of the general.
Days later, when taking over the Rodrigo Delgado wallet, the exit request was maintained. However, on 6 November his tenure was ratified with the renewal of the High Command of Carabineros by 2021.
