translated from Spanish: Chileans in foreigners seek approval from the International District to exercise the right to suffrage in the election of Constituents

The community of Chileans abroad requested the creation of District 29 or International District, with the aim that the thousands of compatriots residing outside the country can exercise the right to suffrage and be able to choose the constituents in the drafting of the new Magna Carta.
At the moment about half a million Chileans would be excluded from this historic process. Current legislation allows Chileans abroad to vote only for presidential, primary and plebiscite elections. On Monday, November 16, the discussion began in the Committee on Constitution, Legislation, Justice and Regulations of the Chamber of Deputies, in order to establish this electoral district abroad.
Although an agreement was reached to put the project on table this week for its legislation, this ultimately did not happen. The Chile Network Awakened International and other groups of Chileans abroad are mobilizing for the creation of this district in order to participate in the constituent process.
From a statement Chilean residents abroad commented that “because many of the compatriots living abroad were forced to emigrate for various reasons (labor, students, policies), we consider that the fairest thing is that we are allowed to participate in this historic process that gives the possibility of influencing the Fundamental Charter that governs our lives and in this way working on the construction of a new Chile , fairer, more supportive and inclusive.”
They added that “we expect parliamentarians to take into account that we live in a globalized world in which the movement of people between different countries is becoming more and more normal every day and that is why it is necessary to legislate to facilitate the electoral and civic participation of all Chileans without distinction.”
