Next Tuesday, December 29, senators will discuss the project of voluntary termination of pregnancy, which has already obtained half a sanction in the lower house. In this context, the National Campaign for the Right to Legal Abortion, Safe and Free, which has been sustaining this struggle for 15 years, issued a statement demanding that they be part of history and allow abortion to be legal in Argentina.The text begins with arguments based on statistical data on the impact of the practice that is now illegal. “Today every 3 hours in our country a girl between 10 and 14 years old is forced to go and give birth. Since the return of democracy, in Argentina there have been 3200 deaths from abortions performed in unsanitary conditions. All those deaths could have been prevented,” he says.

In addition, from the Campaign they seek to depart from the sustained argument in personal and/or religious beliefs. “We are not discussing personal positions in relation to the particular experience of abortion, but rather raising what the Argentine State’s response will be to those whose life circumstances lead them to decide the termination of a pregnancy,” they say. In this line, the statement warns: “We can take a qualitative leap in that response, and ensure respectful accompaniments, listening, quality health services. Or we can ignore the problem of abortion, and continue to condemn these women, girls and other pregnant people to have an abortion underground and without adequate health services.”
“This moment is a hinge: it’s up to you to change history,” they say since the Campaign.
The statement concludes: “This 29 December we have the opportunity as a society to move towards the extension of rights. Senators and senators are part of history and pay off this debt of democracy.”
