translated from Spanish: 5G tender managed to raise US$453 million for the state

This afternoon, the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Undertel) reported that the Public Competitions for the development of 5G networks raised a total of USD 453 million for the State. This figure far exceeds USD 74 million in spectrum tenders made throughout history at the national level.
In this way, Chile, in addition to being the first in the region to compete spectrum for the 5G and the South American country that has had the most spectrum to be contested (1,800 MHz), now establishes a new collection mark in the sector.
“Today we close a successful contest for 5G networks, which will not only be transformational for the citizens of our country, but also deliver important resources to tax coffers, which are always important, even more so in times of pandemic. Our mission as a ministry is to connect the country and, without a doubt, that the new 5G network, together with other of our initiatives, will be transformed into high-speed roads that will improve the quality of life of our users,” said Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Gloria Hutt.
For her part, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pamela Gidi, indicated that “today we are finishing one of the objectives that we set ourselves from the beginning of this Government which is to tender spectrum for the development of 5G networks, which will go to live benefit the citizens, the academy and the different productive sectors of the country. After three years today we can say that we are facing a competition that has exceeded all expectations, bringing a considerable amount to tax collection, which speaks to the attractiveness of the Chilean telecommunications sector.”
3.5 GHz band tiebreaker
The Subtel also announced that the companies Movistar, Entel and Wom won the bid for the tiebreaker of the 3.5 GHz band. This, after presenting the highest economic offers, amounting to about 117 billion pesos (about USD 163 million), 100 billion pesos (about USD 139 million) and 32 billion pesos (about USD 45 million), respectively.
In this sense, the firms Movistar, Entel and Wom were awarded 50 MHz each, totaling the 150 MHz available for that contest.
It should be noted that in the previous tenders of this band, the spectrum was allocated to the different operators without income to the State and without demands for coverage and quality, so this process is part of as the first to secure these elements.
5G bidding
As part of the social considerations that companies that are awarded the 5G Public Competitions will have, 366 locations will benefit for the first time with high-speed mobile Internet and 199 hospitals will be connected to the new network. Also, outside urban areas, various airports, scientific centres of interest and seaports will also be favoured.
However, it should be considered that, in addition to what is offered by companies, in the short term there will be an investment of millions of dollars in the country associated with the installation of infrastructure suitable for the operation of 5G networks.
