translated from Spanish: Concern in the Fifth Region: Municipalities could run out of vaccines in the coming days

Mayors from different communes in the country have pointed out that they have run out of vaccine stocks. Some of them have already disclosed this situation to the Ministry of Health (Minsal), and say that the Government would have committed to getting more doses.
In this regard, the mayor of Quillota, Luis Mella (DC), told Emol that he spoke on Wednesday with Health Minister Enrique Paris, “and he assured me that there will be vaccines within the next few days.”
However, there is no clarity as to the date on which they would receive these doses, a situation of concern, considering that only 3 thousand of the 15 thousand doses they have received in total remain.
“The problem that occurred to us yesterday, is that we waited for vaccines to be replenished in the coming days and the head of the Viña del Mar-Quillota Health Service (SSVQ) met with health services because there would be no more vaccines in several more days, and we had to notify our population that we were going to have to stop the inoculation for teachers under 60” the communal chief added.
On the other hand, Mella argued that of all the people who were vaccinated yesterday, “only 111 of them were under the age of 60, so it is categorically proven that we have respected the vaccination schedule.” In that regard, it emphasized that the lack of stock did not by adjustments of the municipality.
Concern in Quilpué
There’s also concern in Quilpué. The municipality could run out of vaccines next week. “We have 8,800 vaccines in stock, and we are vaccinated an average of 3,000 people a day, that is, we arrive smoothly on Friday, we are not sure what happens on Monday regarding the availability of vaccines,” said the director of municipal health, Luis Basáez.
Basáez said that all they have received so far is “the new schedule and the instruction to strictly stick to what he says, which has caused conflict between the officials who are vaccinating and others who did not get the information, but we were strictly told to comply, or else there would be vaccine stock problems.”
Critical situation in spas
The situation is no better in the spa communes, where even a significant part of the floating population would have received the dose, which harms residents. This scenario was raised by the mayor of El Tabo, Alfonso Muñoz (PS), who ensured that they have enough vaccines until Friday.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen next week, but this week we’ve already got it guaranteed, because 3,000 vaccines arrived between Monday and Tuesday, which is the weekly average required,” he said.
For Muñoz, the Government should pay more attention to the spa communes, “because here in the commune of El Tabo, it is the floating population that has taken the highest percentage of vaccines from our commune”.
“So, at the end of the day, when the processes are running out, we’re going to have a major vaccine deficit for our population (…) it’s going to come to a time when the seremi or minister is going to tell us, they’ve already given us all the scheduled doses for the commune, but we’re going to have a high resident percentage that hasn’t received their vaccine,” he said.
Viña del Mar
In Viña del Mar, Mayor Virginia Reginato sent a letter to the Ministry of Health expressing concern about the lack of stock. “I would like to send this office where I express my concern about a possible lack of vaccines for Viña del Mar as of this Friday, February 19, which would interrupt the normal functioning of the vaccination process entrusted by its Ministry and consequently would mean a great problem for the Colombian community, who are actively participating and looking forward to being inoculated” , says the misiva quoted by Emol.
“According to the daily inoculation records that are achieved in the 64 vaccination modules installed, an average of 6,000 vaccines are needed, so according to the schedule set this Friday, February 19, we would be running out of the amount of dosage needed to provide all of our points,” he adds.
