Kim Kardashian West filed for divorce from Kanye West in Los Angeles Superior Court after six and a half years of marriage, showing court documents.
The decision leads to the imminent end of “Kimye” and ends with one of the most followed celebrity unions of the 21st century: the marriage of a reality show superstar and a hip hop and fashion tycoon with four children, a vast fortune to divide and even more fame.
West and Kardashian began dating in 2012 and had their first daughter in 2013. West proposed to her soon after using a giant screen in the empty stadium of the San Francisco Giants, and they married on May 24, 2014 in a Renaissance fortress in Florence, Italy. It was the first marriage for West, 43, and the third for Kardashian, 40.
The divorce application comes following the September announcement that the show that made his family famous, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” will come to an end in 2021 after 14 years on the air.
Although the union was not lasting, it did surpass the prognostics of many cynics who thought their ruin was inevitable given their respective huge personalities, West’s well-known fickleness and the fact that Kardashian’s previous marriage, to former NBA player Kris Humphries, was truly fleeting.
Kardashian first married 19, in 2000, to music producer Damon Thomas, and divorced him in 2004. In 2011 he married Humphries at a highly publicized wedding that aired on television as a two-part special on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”.
She filed for divorce from the basketball player three months later, although she was still legally married in 2012 when she and West, an old friend who had paid tribute to her in her songs, began dating and she became pregnant.
Since Humphries’ divorce, Kardashian has retained the services of America’s best-known divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser, whose client list includes Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and Britney Spears. Wasser filed for divorce on Friday. The first way to report it was the TMZ showbiz cybersite.
Kardashian is tied to his life in the Los Angeles area, but West is from Chicago and spends much of his time — including many of the last months of his marriage — on his estate in Wyoming, where he wants his children to accompany him.
The four children are all young: North is 7 years old, Saint 5, Chicago 3, and Psalm 21 months old.
Both Kardashian and West took advantage of his initial fame — he as a well-known hip hop producer and the rapper behind hits such as “Stronger” and “Gold Digger”; her as a star of realities — in larger ventures, managing to amass a considerable fortune.
