Michoacán. – Migrants may participate in federal elections through proportional representation.
According to the Deputy President of the Migration Commission, Sergio Baez Torres, the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation ruled in favor of a demand from the migrants themselves, so they could participate at the federal level, while in any case, he noted, the INE would have to adapt its laws to respond to the Court’s ruling.
He said that it was one of the issues to be addressed in a migrant forum as there were also a couple of initiatives in the State Congress to be addressed on behalf of migrant Michoacans to recognize their political rights, one in which it proposed widespread residency, i.e. migrants could access an area of political participation , without the requirement to have lived at least six months in the state; while the second proposes the provision of a space in the Legislative Branch for a migrant MEMBER through the multi-nominal route.

The Member stressed the importance of meeting the needs of migrants, since their economic contributions to the entity mean another state budget and they have been marginalized from political decision-making.
