translated from Spanish: Police and military executed nearly 2,900 people in Venezuela in 2020, according to NGOs

At least 2,853 people were killed by the different armed bodies of the Venezuelan state in 2020, the non-governmental organization Provea reported on Tuesday (09.03.2021).
GNP and its elite FAES group, the deadliest
The body identified as responsible for further deaths is the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), mainly through the elite Special Action Forces (FAES) group, which the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called for to be dissolved, Provea said.
The GNP “was responsible for 672 murders, representing 23.55% of the total,” the NGO says as part of the Magnifier for Life initiative, a project to research and disseminate the impact of police and military violence, focused on extrajudicial executions.
The main “operations center” of the FAES “are the slums where the poor live in the cities and towns of Venezuela and some rural areas”.
Behind them are state police forces, with 721 alleged executions (25.71%), the Criminal and Criminal Scientific Investigations Corps (Cicpc), with 593 cases (17.52%); and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), with 359, mostly through its Bolivarian National Guard (GNB).
Poor young people were the main victims of “false positives”
According to Provea, “most of the victims were young people from popular sectors between the ages of 18 and 30, indicating a pattern of discrimination that puts young people at risk.”
In 2020, the northwestern state Zulia (bordering Colombia) recorded the most deaths with 667, followed by Aragua with 297, Bolivar (269) and Lara (193).
The organization also notes that “in most of the killings perpetrated by the public force, through the testimony of relatives, sufficient elements are provided that lead to the boast that these are extrajudicial executions”.
“In fact, we see the handling of false clashes, which has been known in Latin America as false positives,” he says.
