For this Monday, March 29 at 11 hours, the joint session organized by the chair of the Constitution and Interior Government Committee of the Chamber of Deputies was organized to discuss the postponement of the next elections.
The presidents of those instances had an appointment for this Tuesday, however, Marcos Ilabaca (PS) and his PPD peer, Andrea Parra, made the decision after learning the details of the report prepared by the Covid-19 Advisory Committee, which recommended that the Ministry of Health postpone the elections of councillors, mayors, regional and conventional governors constituting the sharp rise of covid-19 cases.
Ilabaca said: “After reading the report of the covid advisory board, we believe that this issue should be addressed urgently. That is why we have decided in conjunction with the Chair of the Committee on Internal Government to quote urgently by Monday at 11 a.m. this joint session.”
“We believe that the decision should be made urgently, with a technical background and with an eminently sanitary view. Our primary, secondary and tertiary obligation is to protect the lives and health of Chileans and if it is necessary to postpone the elections as a product of this situation, we will,” he added.
Parra added that “continuing to stretch the elastic only causes uncertainty and stress on table vowels, candidates and voters. In addition, we advance the committee because all the actors will be there and I think the best decision can be made based on evidence.”
“More than the opinion of presidential candidates, we need the opinion of election and health experts. That is the aim of the committee on Monday,” she concluded.
