translated from Spanish: Karol G: “Success is seen more by outsiders than by one (…) I feel more Carolina than Karol G”

Despite the hits he adds on his back, such as “Tusa” or “Bichota”, Karol G does not yet feel like a consecrated artist or a idol. “I have every intention of doing it, I go that way,” he assumes.
However, among the pandemic lock-ups, the singer wanted to flee confinement and invite her fans to ride the flight “KG0516”, along with a group of luxury guests that includes names such as Ozuna, J Balvin, Anuel AA, Nathy Peluso, Camilo and much more.
According to the album name, in addition to emulating a flight, refers to one of the most important dates for the artist. “On May 16, 2006, my parents first signed a contract for me, because I was a minor, like Karol G,” she says.
“It was really the first time that, by contract, I called myself Karol G, which is really where the whole process was born and it all started. That date had never been forgotten and I always wanted to use it to tell people, ‘Hey, success doesn’t just come from ‘Bichota’ or come from ‘Tusa’, but it comes from over there.’ So this was my perfect opportunity,” he adds.
What was it like to collaborate with so many artists on this project?

Wow, it was fantastic, it brought me a lot. Look, every song I had in my head would say, “This song sounds to me with such a person” or “this song sounds to me with such an artist.” If that artist didn’t sing in the song, it wouldn’t come out. I mean, there were songs that were left off the album because for me, if that person wasn’t there, it wasn’t going to add up to the magic I wanted. So all the people you see who are on this album added that secret touch that for me was missing every song. Obviously there are songs where I’m alone, but I had the opportunity to have artists that I love and admire very much, like Camilo, Ozuna, Nathy Peluso, all those people on the album.
You’re also with Ivy Queen…

Yes, I finally had a chance to work with her. (Laughter). I think it’s an album that’s going to give people a lot of surprises, they’re pretty, special surprises. I think if it’s not a super big album, I assure you that in my heart it’s already a work of art because the more I listen to it, the more I like it and that was the only thing I wanted with my album, that I loved it so much that at the end of the day I felt very happy with the product there.
And you still sing with people who aren’t so close to urban gender, is there a lot of gender fusion?

There is a variety of genres, there is a song that definitely when you listen to it is going to take you to Mexico, there is another song that while you listen to it you will stop in three different places because I did so many sound experiments… There’s a particular song that has a little bossa nova, a little flamenco and a little bachata together. There are a lot of experiments together but it wasn’t really like, “I want to do an experiment and mix things up and see what happens,” but I had crazy ideas in my head of sounds that I wanted to use. I think it’s about taking the risks. At the end of the day, when you always try to go to the fixed one, that may be the mistake. I think within the risks you win bigger things, so that’s what happens with this album: we’re practically taking a lot of risks that people are going to hear.
What’s it like to be one of the most important Latin artists?

Oh, that sounds like a lot of responsibility. (Laughter). No, actually, I think success is seen more by people outside than yourself, because I am in my house, almost always with my parents, with my sisters, with my family that makes me feel even like Carolina more than Karol G and is that as in my house I share my plans, I share with them the things I want to do , then there I am toused, in a giant shirt, writing ideas, writing songs… To be honest with you, the success outside I feel like people see it more. I feel happy because I’m making music, I do what I like, and because people are enjoying it. I hope that this moment will stand and that God will give me the opportunity for this success to continue at least until I can go out and sing live and can sing all these hits like “Tusa”, “Bichota” and “Location”, which I am crazy to sing. (Laughter). I’m just asking for that, but I’m very happy and very grateful.
How do you see the female music scene?

I see the picture and meet amazing women where I look. From Chile incredible new artists are being introduced, Argentina is another country that surprises me a lot. Spain is presenting amazing artists, also from my country, Colombia… I feel like maybe right now it’s not that there’s not much, but that opportunity is still missing.d of exposing talent. Obviously today is very different from what it was before, since there are great achievements where women are there, we already participate in awards, they give us spaces in the panels to tell our story.
