translated from Spanish: Group causes destruction in CU; UNAM says they want to ‘draw attention’

A group of 18 people caused destruction in offices and vehicles in Ciudad Universitaria, reported the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Through a statement, UNAM noted that photographers in the national press were also assaulted, and some were robbed of their work equipment.

According to the institution, the aggressors set fire in grasslands of the Pedregal Ecological Reserve, on university grounds, which was controlled by UNAM and Fire Department personnel.
“Vandalos did not claim to have any specific demands related to the institution and simply assaulted and caused destruction on campus, for the sole purpose of attracting media attention,” he warned.
UNAM noted that it is “a victim of crude provocations by groups of criminals who seek to obtain media reflectors for unknown purposes.”

On 21 March, UNAM reported that a group of people illegally entered the Faculty of Art and Design (FAD), which would have destroyed security cameras, the computer building, stolen furniture and equipment from the Xochimilco campus.
The unit noted that these groups “intentionally take advantage of the confinement of university students in their homes to loot and cause destruction to heritage.”
He also indicated that he had made contact and reached concrete agreements with the Authorities of Mexico City to intensify surveillance around university campuses, “in order to prevent offenders from further committing crimes.”
