translated from Spanish: AMLO agrees with US to deploy 10,000 soldiers on southern border

The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed with the United States to deploy 10,000 soldiers on Mexico’s southern border.
White House spokes staff Jen Psaki confirmed this monday at a press conference. He assured that the decision was the result of talks between the governments of Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
The Mexican administration took the initiative to send 10,000 troops to the southern border, Psaki added, while Guatemala and Honduras will deploy a thousand 500 and seven thousand officers, which will be distributed among military personnel and police.
The decision was made weeks ago, the result of talks between different officials of the respective governments.
The goal of this deployment is to hinder the path to the United States, as well as make border crossing more complicated, the White House spokestor said.
Faced with this revelation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) held that the Government of Mexico “promotes orderly, safe, regular and human rights-related migration”.
He added that both economic and social development is the only ‘bottom solution’ to the migration phenomenon.
“Mexico will maintain the existing deployment of Federal Forces in its border area, with the aim of enforcing its own immigration legislation, in order to provide care to migrants, mainly unaccompanied minors, and combat human trafficking.”
Since March 19, the Government of Mexico reported on sending operatives to its border with Central America; however, it did not specify the number of elements it would implement.
Through the National Migration Institute (INM), it was announced that the operation was to “safeguard the rights and integrity of minors migrants from different Central American nations, used by criminal networks as transit safe conduct to reach the north of the country”.
From 1 January to 18 March 2021, four thousand and 180 children and adolescents, accompanied and uncompanied, had been identified as prey to human trafficking.
For this reason, the decision was made to deploy assets along the Suchiate River, bridges and points of internment or border access.
Similarly, technological equipment would be available, from drones to night vision mechanisms for surveillance in areas and regions identified as irregular access routes for migrants.
