translated from Spanish: Again, older adults wait hours for vaccine in Guadalajara

Maria Elena and Timothy wait in line to be vaccinated. They stop, sit down and recharge in the bars.  They have been trained for more than 5 hours to enter the headquarters of the Army and Air Force Museum. Timothy is an 82-year-old man who complains about the pains of waiting. He’s got a pacemaker and he’s under pressure.
“They locked us up for a year and now yes (for vaccination) they took us out like dogs… that we’re worthless anymore? Why do they put us in these conditions? Do you think this is worthy? Five vaccination centers were taken from us compared to last time, because more of us got together! I’m sorry, I’m offended,” says Maria Elena.
The couple attended the third day of vaccination, according to the surnames that are vaccinated this day – from the letter H to the O-, and hoped that it would not be like the previous two days where long lines were presented in the four vaccination locations that the capital of Jalisco has.

When they attended for the first dose, between 19 and 22 March, they had to be formed for three days to be vaccinated. “Sometimes (the authorities) don’t realize that you don’t have to line it up, as soon as we’re both single and as there are many of us,” adds Maria Elena.
But this Thursday’s situation was no different. The four headquarters in the city – Agua Azul Park, San Rafael Park, The University Center for Exact Sciences and Engineering (Cucei) and the Army and Air Force Museum – presented long lines.
The couple were not spoken to by the Welfare Secretariat to give them an attendance appointment, as ensured that it would happen. Instead of Salvador, yes, but it didn’t do much good either.

He was told to show up Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., but because of the long lines that were announced, he decided to leave at 10:00 in the morning to peek out. He despaired so much, he decided to return later, after 2:00 p.m.
But the surprise was that there was no line that would be divided between the aforementioned and the people who were forming. In the end he trained, did not reach a vaccine and was signed to come today at 8:00 in the morning.
This Thursday Salvador was lucky, because he knew where to form. A discreet row, which was exclusive to those who had their ballot sealed the previous day. Meanwhile, Peter and Alexandra stayed in the general row for more than six hours, asking for “where the sealed ballot was formed” and sent them to the common row.

Local media reported yesterday there were older adults who stayed 17 hours trained to access vaccination.  And from antier the long lines, which involved traffic in the road areas where the road complexes were.
Even those who formed on Tuesday, May 4 from 7 a.m., told them at 7pm that they were not enough, to form the next day.
A change of strategy… it didn’t work
Although there was a change in strategy in vaccination, between the application of the first and second doses, it was also not successful.
In the first application, the authorities reported only doses to vaccinate one in three people living in the city. It was practically said that whoever came first won.
This time 102 thousand doses arrived to be applied, enough for the older adults of the city. But instead of offering the 9 locations they previously set up, they offered four, causing the long lines.
This also involved people spending more on their transfer, such as Emilia and her mother who spent 100 pesos on a taxi for their arrival at lunch.
“Plus the food, the bathroom, the copies and I even bought a bench because I couldn’t take it anymore, not because if I’ve spent my 250 pesos and I’m missing another 100 for the taxi back, it’s a luxury to come to the vaccine,” Emilia says.
Lack of cooperation between Welfare and local authorities
In the first dose applied, Animal Político documented a lack of cooperation between the Secretariat of Welfare and the authorities of the Jalisco Ministry of Health and the Guadalajara City Council.
On that occasion, local authorities recognized that they could not have much interference in planning and that they only placed toilets, fences and were assisting in training. While welfare Secretariat denied chaos and was said to be surprised by the questioning of long lines.
In Jalisco, control of the pandemic is in charge of the cooperation alliance between the University of Guadalajara, the Civil Hospitals and the Jalisco Ministry of Health.
The highest number of COVID-19 tests is performed in university facilities and are free of charge. Even the University created a team ofvolunteers to make the vaccination campaign possible in the state, but have pointed out not being required for vaccination.
In the midst of the dispute, the University of Guadalajara with support from the Jalisco Ministry of Health proposed to the Secretariat of Welfare to open a new headquarters in the University Center for Art, Architecture and Design (CUAAD), which had been used in the first application successfully.
The authorization was announced on Thursday and will open its doors tomorrow, on the last day of vaccination to older adults and surnames going from P to Z.
After the announcement, the university authorities asked not to form from today, but the desperation prevailing in the tapatíos prevents it. The line exceeds two blocks near the university center.
When asked why to form a day early, they respond that there is no certainty when more doses arrive, and fear that time will continue to pass without receiving it.
According to the Ministry of Health’s vaccination manuals, the Pfizer vaccine – which is currently being applied – should be placed 3 to 6 weeks after the first dose, but this is the seventh week since the first dose.

A vaccine that doesn’t reach Ocotlán
Francis went on to get vaccinated on March 19 this year. He learned from relatives that due to the lack of people who wanted to get vaccinated, the headquarters of Expo Eventos, in the municipality of Ocotlán, received anyone over 60 years of age to get vaccinated.
Francis drove 80 kilometers in the company of his compadres Justina and Antonio to get there. At the time everything was joy, but 7 weeks have elapsed without being notified of the second application.
According to the Ministry of Health manual, the application of Sinovac vaccination should be between 4 and 5 weeks between the first and second doses, but this is the 7 week.
Other municipalities outside the Guadalajara Metropolitan Zone have already been empused since the end of April, such as Encarnación de Díaz, San Juan de los Lagos, La Barca, Tizapan, Tuxcueca, Zapotlán del Rey and Jocotepec.
In view of this, the Ministry of Health was asked on the subject, but at the close of the edition it had not responded.
