The Uruguayan press reported that Larrañaga, a historic leader of the National Party, died of cardiorespiratory arrest, but there is no official information on this. Larrañaga was mayor of Paysandú, his home department, between 1990 and 1999, and in 2004 he took to the national and international stage as a candidate for the Presidency.
