translated from Spanish: Despite polarization INE awaits the biggest election in history

The president of the National Electoral Institute, Lorenzo Cordova, stressed that despite the polarization and intolerance that has occurred during the electoral process, this did not discourage the participation of citizens in the largest elections in history.
“(…) this day is also historic because it has consolidated the equal and inclusive character of our democracy.
The third reason that makes this day historic derives from the fact that the polarization and intolerance that have prevailed in the public conversation did not discourage the participation of citizens in the elections, on the contrary, opinion studies anticipate a copious participation. We hope so,” Córdova Vianello said in her message at the opening of election day.

These are also the elections with high rates of violence, as up to a day before the elections 36 candidates and 91 politicians were killed. They also recorded 910 assaults from threats and intimidation to kidnappings, attacks and beatings from September 7, 2020 to June 5, 2021.
Despite the obstacles that have arisen, the president of the INE said on June 6 that the magnitude of these elections exceeds that of any other in the history of the country.

“Never in the history of our country had so many women and men been summoned to recreate democracy through the ballot box, and the best thing about it is that never so many had agreed, with such civic commitment, to participate in Election Day,” Córdova said during the civic ceremony at the start of election day.
Regarding the pandemic and its impact on election day, Lorenzo Cordova said that the polling stations will be safe spaces to exercise the vote and free of contagion.

“We go to the polls with the certainty that the polling stations will be free spaces in a double sense, to be able to exercise our vote without conditions and constraints for the political option of our preference, on the one hand, and free of all contagion on the other,” he added.

Cordova asks to respect those who receive and count the votes
According to the data in his message, there are one and a half million men and women serving as polling officials, 2.3 million representatives of political parties, 20 thousand election observers and half a million foreign vigilantes who monitor the election.
Lorenzo Cordova thanked the participation of the contenders and governors, legislators, businessmen, the media and society in general. To all of them, he asked them to be respectful of those who are carrying out the process receiving and counting the votes, and of the established times of the election. He said that around 11:00 p.m. there will be results of the quick count for governorships and the Chamber of Deputies.
Finally, Cordova called on the citizens to go out and vote, and also to report any electoral crime freely to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Electoral Crimes.
