translated from Spanish: UDI deputies propose that the State and companies assume 100% of the delinquent debts of the most vulnerable families in the country

UDI deputies Juan Antonio Coloma and Sergio Gahona announced that they will propose to the Ministers of Energy and Social Development the forgiveness of the accounts owed in the electricity supply to the most vulnerable families in the country. This, after it was announced that the debt of this service amounted to about 250 billion according to the data provided by the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels.
This proposal seeks to cancel the debt of 60% of the most vulnerable families in the Social Registry of Households, while for the rest of the clients it is proposed to seek a comprehensive solution between them, the State and private enterprise, in addition to extending the deadlines for regularizing payments.
“What we have to understand is that, in general, Chileans always keep their basic services accounts up to date, therefore that there is this number of delinquent customers is explained exclusively by the serious economic effects that this pandemic has brought,” said the UDI deputies, who added that “the debts exist due to events beyond their control. , and what we cannot do is ignore this situation and abandon them to their fate, leaving them with this large debt in the future.”
Along these lines, Coloma and Gahona insisted that “it is precisely in this type of situation that the state must make an additional effort, presenting an economic solution to those who maintain unpaid accounts.” But in addition, they called on private enterprise “to rise to the crisis we are experiencing” and that, for the same reason, the unpaid debts of the 60% of the most vulnerable population are covered in equal parts by the State and the electricity companies.
Finally, the UDI parliamentarians announced that they will also seek to replicate the same solution for the most vulnerable families who have unpaid water and gas bills.
“We are in the worst crisis of the last hundred years and the State, but above all private enterprise, must necessarily make an additional effort covering all these debts, and not wait for a law to be forced to act,” the union deputies closed.
