The Electoral Qualifying Tribunal (Tricel) proclaimed on Friday the results of the historic election of conventional constituents held on May 15 and 16 where the 155 citizens who will be in charge of drafting the New Constitution were elected.
Through a ceremony that was transmitted online from the premises of the Tricel, the names were made official. President Sebastián Piñera, and other authorities of the country such as the president of the Supreme Court, Guillermo Silva, of servel, Andrés Tagle and the vice presidents of the Senate and the Chamber were present at the event.
The president of Tricel, Rosa Egnem Saldías, said that the institution “has once again fulfilled its function of scrutinizing and qualifying the electoral processes as it has done with those that have been developed in Chile since 1925. In this way, as is often recalled on occasions such as this, for 95 years strict compliance has been given, providing security, confidence and certainty to the citizens regarding the electoral processes in which they have participated”.
“The Tricel has proceeded to issue the judgment of proclamation of results of election of conventional constituents that took place on May 15 and 16, 2021. It should be mentioned that the qualification of an election is a complex legal act, so that the organs of electoral justice, appreciating the facts as a jury, weigh, appreciate or determine the qualities and circumstances in which these processes have been carried out, according to the principles of legality, transcendence, timeliness, publicity and certainty, whether the procedures ordered by law have been faithfully followed and whether the result corresponds to the expressed will really for the voters,” he added.
“This sovereign act, republican and austere, as is the tone of all those convened by the court, is the full confirmation of the democratic vocation of Chile, our country, the genuine observance, of the role that the various constitutional organs must fulfill as mandated by the supreme code, allows citizens to have the conviction that their decision expressed in the voting boxes , is the one that has been reliably collected by the data of the count and the qualification of this electoral process,” he said.
Now, President Piñera has three days to convene by exempt Supreme Decree the first session of the Constitutional Convention, which must be held within 15 days of the date of publication.
