translated from Spanish: They want to stop us, but we have a majority in Congress: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that his opponents united in a conservative bloc to face his transformation project, but that they did not succeed and the bloc in favor of his government will have a “comfortable majority” in the Chamber of Deputies.
With this, we have the certainty that the budget destined to the development of the country, the well-being of the people will be approved and that the aid programs for the poor or projects such as the Felipe Ángeles airport, the Mayan Train, the Welfare Bank or the Isthmus of Tehuantepec project will not disappear, the president said during the report for the third year of the 2018 electoral victory.
“In that bloc, businessmen, media owners, journalists and right-wing intellectuals, party leaders, leaders of the so-called civil society, and politicians of the old regime, among others, legitimately joined together to confront the transformation project that we are implementing to end corruption and inequality,” the president said.

He added that the members of this bloc are adversaries, not enemies. “(…) we do not see them as enemies to be destroyed but as adversaries to be defeated. Quite simply, we defend and represent different and conflicting nation projects.”
We did what we could humanly in the face of COVID
López Obrador said his government has done “everything humanly possible” to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and save lives.
“We reported and responded on time,” he told his cabinet in the central courtyard of the National Palace.

He said that “we lifted with opportunity the public health system that was in ruins, we did not hesitate to allocate resources to the attention of the pandemic and save lives.”
“In 15 months, the health budget has increased by 70 billion pesos. Hospitals were completed, converted and equipped; more than 70 thousand health workers were hired and trained.”

López Obrador added that – although he does not like to make comparisons – Mexico is “neither in America nor in the rest of the world in the first places of mortality from COVID.”
The president on Thursday gives a report for the third anniversary of his electoral victory in the National Palace. Due to the pandemic, only members of his cabinet are among the guests.
Criminal groups were inherited
The president said that his government inherited the criminal groups that were already integrated since previous years, and denied that new gangs have been created so far in his administration.
“There is governability in our country,” he said, adding that his government was already confronting those groups, but not with violence, but with other “more humane” and “more effective” methods.

He pointed out that during his administration the incidence of crime fell; detailed that homicides decreased 2%, vehicle theft 40%, kidnapping 41% and burglary by 26%
However, he acknowledged that there is an increase in femicide crimes with 14%, theft from individual public transport 9% and extortion 26%.
Elections passed without massacres or violence
The president said that this year there were no “state elections” and that during the electoral period there were no massacres or violent acts.
“There were no massacres and no violence was unleashed against innocent citizens to instill fear in most states. In Guerrero, for example, no candidate was attacked and almost the same thing happened in most states,” he said.
He also stressed that there should be no post-election protests over allegations of fraud or any significant demonstrations in the streets or squares.

“Full freedoms have been guaranteed, without the political, media or police repression of other times,” he said.
Although the president admitted that he did not stop registering vote buying with money, cards or delivery of pantries.
In his report, he presumed that, after the results of the election, the bloc in favor of his government will have a comfortable majority in the Chamber of Deputies, beating the opposition, and thus secure the budget allocated for the well-being of the people.
In addition, he said that on June 6, 162,538 polling stations were opened, 99.98% of what was scheduled, and only 32 polling stations were not installed due to the atmosphere of violence in some places in 7 municipalities of the country.
