The Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office arrested Hugo Rolando “N”,allegedly responsible for the murder of Simón Pedro Pérez López, an activist and human rights defender, a member of the organization Las Abejas de Acteal, on July 5.
According to the official version, the man was arrested by elements of the Specialized Police in the ejido La Mesilla, municipality of Tzimol, Chiapas.
He was then transferred to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, to be brought before the judge who ordered his arrest.

Simon Pedro died after being shot in the head while shopping at the market, accompanied by his son, in the municipal capital of Simojovel.
The defender was an indigenous Tsotsil, 35 years old and had seven children. She was a catechist of the parish of Santa Catalina in the Municipality of Pantelhó and in 2020 she had been president of the board of directors of the Civil Society Las Abejas de Acteal, a Catholic organization in which she grew up, since her family has been part of her since the 90s.
The work of Simón Pedro Pérez López has been key to allowing the return to the community of Los Chorros of some 30 members of his organization, who had been forcibly displaced in 2019. He was very active in denouncing the responsibility of the Mexican State in the Acteal massacre and in demanding that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issue a substantive report on the massacre. In the interview he gave us in November 2020, he told how the release of people who had been sentenced for their responsibility in the massacre, and their return to the region, generated fear in the population.
