translated from Spanish: From breaks to accusations of political operation: the tension generated in The People’s List by the candidacy of Cristián Cuevas

Victoria Popular is called the movement to which Cristián Cuevas belongs, and which is part of Chile Digna, the bloc of political parties that groups the PC, the Social Green Regionalist Federation, Humanist Action, Equality Party, Libertarian Left, among others. And while a part of Chile Digna is behind the candidacy of Gabriel Boric (PC, FRVS, AH), others disassociated themselves from their choice to La Moneda, as is the case of the Equality Party.
The appearance of the name of the former union leader on the presidential board was during this week, after the People’s List reviewed several options that emerged as presidential – who wanted to present themselves or who proposed their bases – where the mayor of Valparaiso Jorge Sharp, Soledad Mella (recycler of Lo Hermida), the communicator Julio César Rodríguez, the singer Anita Tijoux and even the historian Gabriel Salazar, as he himself told The Clinic, circulated. The original idea was that Cristian Cuevas would be on a kind of shortlist that would be voted on last Tuesday. Those close to the former unionist say he was contacted on Monday. Sectors of the People’s List accuse that “he was lifted at the last minute” and that there were certain reservations with his political past in traditional parties and with governments of the former Coalition.
One of the signs of the resistance it generated in some sectors is that it won with 43 votes in favour and 30 abstentions. The incident caused a break in the LDP Central Committee and there were even rumors of possible resignations. The intention of LDP was to hold a citizen consultation to ratify its presidential option, despite the fact that there are 2 weeks left for registration, and then seek sponsorships. And in part that they expressed on their social networks, when Cuevas is still not officially ratified, despite the fact that he is already registered in the Servel collecting sponsorships.

Why is something taken for granted without it being announced? You think we won’t consult the people first?#lalistadelpueblo

Sectors of The People’s List and close to the world frontamplista accused that there was a political operation of representatives related to some collectivities and movements of Chile Digna, who would have convinced representatives of territorial assemblies to install the name of Cuevas, despite the fact that one of the definitions of the movement was to raise a woman, part of native peoples. Hence, some considered that the Equality Party, the Libertarian Left and the Humanist Party (which works on a parliamentary list with the previous ones), “want to steal The People’s List” and create a new pact called “The People’s List Pact”. They also fear that by losing in the first round, Cuevas will end up giving the support in the second to Gabriel Boric, with whom he shared a coalition and party, in Social Convergence.
In the Equality Party, they said that they did not know about Cuevas’ nomination, until he himself told them that he had been contacted by The People’s List. They added that they have not taken a decision on whether or not they will support Cuevas, which must be resolved at a national meeting of the party’s communal members, which has not yet been scheduled.
