After failing to register in the last legal primaries, from nine o’clock in the morning of this Saturday, August 21, the Chilean center-left develops a citizen consultation that will define the standard-bearer of the Constituent Unity bloc for the presidential elections in November.
On the ballot are Yasna Provoste, president of the Senate supported by the DC; Paula Narváez, former minister of the second government of Michelle Bachelet and supported by the PS-PPD-PL and New Deal; and Carlos Maldonado, former justice minister of the previous government and backed by the Radical Party.
Of those mentioned, only one will join the race for La Moneda —along with Gabriel Boric and Sebastián Sichel elected in the legal primary— and social networks have already taken their first photographic snapshots of the moment. For example, after the last debate of the pact, according to a new Presidential Interbarometer, prepared by the Observatory of Politics and Social Networks of the Central University of Chile, Paula Narváez is the only candidate with a positive balance. The former minister increased her positive mentions in the digital conversation that revolved mainly around the words “consultation”, “pact”, “unity”, “withdrawal”, “violence” and “citizenship”.
His opponents are trapped and their valuations varied, compared to the last measurement of the barometer. Yasna Provoste fails to get her backpack out of the DC and the issue of abortion. According to the poll, when talking about the President of the Senate, the conversation continues to point largely to her party and the dispute that was generated around the debate over the decriminalization of abortion in the House. Recall that the project was rejected with the key vote of the Falangist Joana Pérez, which provoked a harsh questioning about the leadership of Provoste, but that it does not manage to impact its assessment on social networks. In any case, the senator ends positively in her mentions.
Maldonado is the only one who was negatively affected by the last debate, since he ended up declining in positive mentions, which however do not dislodish him and the PR candidate ranks as the second best rated of the pact. According to the poll, the helmsman of the Radical Party has 56% of positive mentions, 42% are negative and 2% of the comments are neutral. Meanwhile, Paula Narváez adds 61% of positive references and 36% negative (3% neutral). And Provoste lay behind with 35% positive, 61% negative and 4% neutral.
It is worth mentioning that this Saturday’s election does not have the organization of the Servel. Therefore, the organizers pointed out that the voters’ list will be the same as that of the governors’ primary held in November 2020.
All members of the Constituent Unity parties, as well as independent citizens without political affiliation, may participate in this consultation. To know the polling place assigned according to the electoral district of servel, you must consult the list available on the website www.consultaciudadana2021.cl.
Following a logic similar to that of a conventional election, the tables will remain open until 18.00 hours, when the votes are counted. Therefore, the first results are expected to be announced after 7.00 p.m.
