translated from Spanish: Ministry of Public Security: deputies of Chile Vamos assure that “a desire” is fulfilled and Chile 21 calls on the opposition to play a role in the face of the “necessary” project

The announcement made by President Sebastián Piñera, who announced the bill that creates the new Ministry of Public Security, which will enter Congress during this day, was highlighted by the deputies of Chile Vamos of the Security Commission of the Lower House.
According to Jorge Alessandri (UDI), Gonzalo Fuenzalida (RN) and Senator Kenneth Pugh (Ind-RN), the announcement fulfills “a desire” because “we know that we need a Ministry with exclusive dedication to security issues, it is the first priority for people.”
“It is an issue to which we are due not only in La Araucanía and many regions of our country and requires specialization, requires coordination, requires special resources and a complete and total dedication, so happy to know the details with the President of the Republic and we will be ready to process it as soon as possible in Parliament, ” explained Deputy Alessandri.
“It’s a great day, finally the government sends the bill that creates the Ministry of Public Security. Crime must be confronted with institutions and if we do not have a ministry dedicated to public security, dedicated to public order, dedicated to controlling migration, controlling microtrafficking, drug trafficking and cybersecurity, we will not face this fight against crime in a good way. This is a desire that I have been fighting for a long time and that finally today is achieved with a transversal agreement to begin to process in Congress the new Ministry of Public Security, “said Deputy Fuenzalida.
For his part, Senator Pugh, valued that “it has been decided to opt for the creation of the new Ministry of Public Security, separating it from the Ministry of the Interior. It requires a ministry of security that is capable of giving a comprehensive response to all the problems of the population, this ministry also has to have an inter-agency work, enhancing what each of the agencies and police do, but fundamental with interoperability so that the data of all people are used correctly. ”
Chile 21: New ministry is “necessary”
From Chile 21 they also reacted to this presidential announcement. Its executive director, Eduardo Vergara, said that “the creation of the new Ministry of Security is necessary and responds to a demand that many of us have been making for a while.”
In Vergara’s opinion, the new institution represents an opportunity to change the security system and “define with greater clarity particularly political responsibilities, but above all to have the necessary institutionality to face the security challenges of the future.”
“The need for this Ministry does not mean that the government can force the times and speed up the process in Congress just to cut the ribbon before leaving. Such an important project requires the necessary and responsible debate. The executive cannot continue to use security only as a press guideline, let alone an announcement as important as this,” he added.
In that line, Vergara called on the opposition to play a role in this issue. “The opposition cannot continue to accept legislative blackmail in security, which in cases has ended with laws of criminal populism,” he said.
“The opposition parties must unify a vision and proposal for this Ministry that particularly considers a security system that is efficient, that achieves the protection of human rights, curbs inequality in security and above all considers territorial challenges,” he concluded.
