Argentina will pay this Wednesday about US $ 1,885 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in concept of the first payment of capital of the extraordinary loan contracted by the administration of Mauricio Macri in 2018, which totals a debt of 44,000 million dollars with the organization. For the payment equivalent to 1,327 million SDRs, the currency of the IMF, part of the Special Drawing Rights distributed by the agency to the different member countries at the end of August, when Argentina received the equivalent of 4,334 million dollars, will be used. The process does not involve a transfer of funds, since the resources it received in Argentina are in an account automatically debited by the IMF.
This Tuesday, President Alberto Fernández before the United Nations Assembly that during the Government of Together for Change a “deudicide” was applied in the country. “Argentina was subjected to toxic and irresponsible indebtedness to the IMF, an unsustainable debt of $57,000 in a year, equivalent to what the IMF allocated during the pandemic to 85 countries in the world,” he said.
For the remainder of 2021, almost $400 million in interest remains to be paid to the IMF in November, and another $1.88 billion on December 22, in the event that the Government does not reach before closing a new financing program with the multilateral organization. The agreement is planned for the execution of the 2022 Budget, according to the project sent last week to Congress by the Ministry of Economy.
