translated from Spanish: CDMX government will withdraw anti-monument placed by women, warns Sheinbaum

The head of the Government of Mexico City assured that the anti-monument placed by women’s collectives in Paseo de la Reforma and renamed as “Glorieta de las mujeres que lucha” will be removed.
Although she recalled that the decision is in the Committee of Monuments of Mexico City, she insisted that there will be a monument for indigenous women.
“It is also important to recognize the women who have fought for women’s rights, but in particular, in this space, it will be for indigenous women who, as I said yesterday and I said at the time when they gave me more than 5,000 signatures, indigenous women, asking that indigenous women be recognized there, this decision that was taken – and which has already been approved by the National Institute of Anthropology and History and its Committee – that the Columbus Monument can be moved to another space is fundamental; and, that this is a space dedicated to indigenous women,” he responded at a press conference.

When asked how the anti-monument placed on September 25 will be withdrawn, Sheinbaum said she will dialogue with feminist collectives about the case.
“It’s important to talk to them; but it is already in the decision of this committee and already, very soon, they will make the decision. And I repeat: it is essential that it be for women who historically have not had a voice; I think that’s what all the women and all the inhabitants of this country and our city agree on,” she said at a conference.

The collectives dedicated the anti-monument to “those who throughout the country have suffered and faced violence, repression and revictimization for facing injustices.”

It is also dedicated to women defenders of water and territory, originally from indigenous peoples and students.
However, Sheinbaum said that the capital government is about to unveil a series of statues in “the Paseo de las Heroines”, intended for all the women who “have forged our Homeland”.
