The family of Brandon Lee, the actor who died on a film set in 1993, spoke.

The accident that occurred this Friday during the filming of “Rust” continues to shock the world. The film’s protagonist, Alec Baldwin, murdered photo director Halyna Hutchins after firing a gun that was supposed to be props. In that same incident the director of the film was seriously injured. Hutchins was flown by helicopter to a New Mexico hospital, where the film was being shot, but was pronounced dead at the hospital. Joel Souza, the director, was also treated urgently and, as it transpired in the last hours, he is already out of danger. For these facts, the Sheriff’s Office of Santa Fe County, New Mexico, advances in the investigation to determine why the gun was loaded and how the unfortunate episode that claimed the life of the 42-year-old woman was triggered.

This tragedy revived a similar accident that occurred almost 30 years ago during the filming of “El Cuervo”. Brandon Lee, son of martial arts icon Bruce Lee, died at age 28 in March 1993 when actor and castmate Michael Massee fired a gun in the middle of a scene and it turned out to be loaded with real cartridges instead of blank cartridges. While filming the fateful scene, Lee was entering through a door and was shot by Michael Massee’s character at close range. It was there that a blank cartridge was fired and the gases from the shot caused the previously fired bullet – which had been trapped in the barrel – to come out with the same force as a gun loaded by a real cartridge, hitting Lee’s abdomen hard.

Michael Massee, the actor who suffered an event similar to Baldwin’s in 1993 for which he accidentally murdered his colleague Brandon Lee during a filming

He fell to the ground, mortally wounded. He was immediately taken to a North Carolina hospital, where the film was being filmed, and underwent more than 5 hours of surgery. However, attempts to save him were in vain as the bullet had pierced his stomach, several vital organs and stopped next to his spine. His case was once again on everyone’s lips because of the similarity of the circumstances that led to two tragic deaths that could have been avoided. In a post on Lee’s official Twitter page, his relatives expressed their condolences to Hutchins’ family: “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and everyone involved in the incident in ‘Rust.’ No one should be killed by a gun on a film set. Period,” reads the message from the account, which is run by his sister, Shannon Lee.

Like Baldwin, Massee expressed on more than one occasion that the tragedy had left him traumatized: “What happened to Brandon was a tragic accident. It’s something I’m going to live with… It took me a long time not only to put it in perspective, but to be able to move on with my life,” said the actor who died in 2016 at age 64For his part, Baldwin said Friday: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness at the tragic accident that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins, wife, mother and colleague of ours, deeply admired,” he wrote via Twitter.

She continued: “I am cooperating fully with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in contact with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, her son, and everyone who knew and loved Halyna.”
