AMLO proposes Undersecretary of Treasury Expenditures for Banxico

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he will propose Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, current Undersecretary of Expenditures of the Ministry of Finance, to be the governor of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
At a press conference, he confirmed that he withdrew from Arturo Herrera’s proposal and pointed out that it is for the first time a woman to head the Bank of Mexico.
“Indeed, Arturo Herrera is not going to be proposed for the Bank of Mexico. I am going to send this week the proposal of Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, the Undersecretary of Finance. She is going to be our proposal, today or tomorrow we are going to send her,” he said.

Yesterday Senator Ricardo Monreal reported that the proposal that Arturo Herrera replace Alejandro Díaz de León as head of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) was withdrawn.
Herrera confirmed, through social networks, that he was notified a week ago that President López Obrador had reconsidered his appointment.

President López Obrador said that the reason for reconsidering the appointment is because they want women to participate and recognize the work that the Undersecretary of Expenditures has done. He affirmed that Rodríguez Ceja meets the requirements to be proposed and that he has his full support.
“She has been acting very well, an exemplary performance, she is in charge of the management of public investments, she has acted with a lot of responsibility not to spend for the sake of spending. It is because we have financial stability, that no additional doubt has been resorted to. She is a very good public servant,” she said of Rodríguez Ceja.
He rejected that the movement of the exchange rate is related to the announcement of the appointment of the new head of Banxico.
“That’s not serious, the exchange rate is moving because the dollar is strengthening, but it’s a global phenomenon. It has nothing to do with the appointment of the Bank of Mexico, it’s other things,” he said.
Arturo Herrera, former finance secretary, had been proposed last June by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as head of the Bank of Mexico, to occupy the position in 2022.
