Negligence Investigated in Death of Child with Cancer in Oaxaca

Oaxaca.- The Medical Arbitration Commission began an investigation to admonish the alleged medical negligence carried out by doctors and nurses of the General Hospital with Specialties of Salina Cruz, in the area of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in Oaxaca, which would have caused the death of a child under 10 years of age with cancer. It was during this week when Ricardo Vargas Zárate, who at 10 years of age had been fighting leukemia, ended up losing his life after being taken to the Children’s Hospital, according to what was denounced by the association “Con Causa” and the relatives of the infant. In addition to the investigation carried out by the Medical Arbitration Commission, the Ministry of Health, for its part, announced that it ordered the temporary separation of the doctors and nurses involved while the investigations required by the case are carried out. According to the complaint filed by Ricardo’s relatives, the doctors would have refused to give first aid to the child, who robbed the hospital in serious condition, after having suffered a relapse. The staff allegedly claimed that they do not have a pediatric specialty or cancer drugs. The child had to spend hours in the intensive care unit without any doctor attending to him, while, according to his mother’s statements, he remained semi-unconscious in a clinical bed until they decided to take him to another institution without the support of an ambulance.
