New extension announced for expiration of identity cards

The Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín, together with the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Sebastián Valenzuela and the Director of the Civil Registry, Sergio Mierzejewski, announced a new decree to extend the validity of the identity card of Chilean people. The measure has a priority to avoid the collapse of the offices of the Civil Registry, because the expiration established December 31 as the deadline. With the new decree, the expired cards between March and December 2020 and 2021, will last until the same day and month that the document indicates, but of the year 2022.The expired cards in January or February of the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, will last until the same day and month that the document indicates, but of the year 2023.Larraín called “to take advantage of this new decree to schedule in time the renewal of your cédulas of identity, using the extension of hours and offices with scheduling system, which we announced a few weeks ago. It is important that there is no more overloading in the system, since many relax, and leave the renewal of the document for the last. On this occasion, we are giving several months of deadline, so that people can organize.” In the case of foreign identity cards, the extension continues until February 28, 2022.
