Buying in the super is up to 3 times more expensive than in central supply

Buying 21 products from the basic basket is up to three times as expensive as in the central supply, according to a report by the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco).
On Monday, its head, Ricardo Sheffield, presented the Who’s Who in the prices of first necessity, in which the price of 21 products in four regions of the country was compared. 
The products that Profeco compared for its analysis are: Canola or corn oil, and the kilo of rice in grain, sugar, beans, potato, bisteck, chicken, onion, carrot, pork chop, egg, toilet soap, tomato, lemon, apple, melon.

Profeco analyzed prices in four supply centers in these regions and in four supermarkets: Walmart, Soriana, Chedraui, and Mega. The highest prices were recorded by Walmart and Soriana.

Prices by region
In the region that includes the center of the country (Mexico City, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla Morelos, Puebla, Querétaro and Tlaxcala) the Central de Abastos, located in the Iztapalapa mayor’s office, offered the lowest price.

In total, this basic basket cost 442.8 pesos, while the place where the cost was highest was Soriana Eugenia, in the Benito Juárez Mayor’s Office, with 1037.25 pesos.
In the northern zone, (Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Durango, Jalisco, Michoacán, San Luis, Potosí, Sinaloa and Zacatecas), the cost was 381.51 pesos in the Central de Abastos de Jalisco, the most expensive was that of Wal-Mart las Américas, in Michoacán with a total of 1031.80 pesos.

In the northern zone (Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora and Tamaulipas) the price in the Central de Abastos de Nuevo León was 383.17 pesos; while at Walmart Las Torres, in Monterrey, it cost 1030.70 pesos.

In the southern part of the country (Campeche, Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco Veracruz and Yucatan), the price of the basic basket in the Central de Abastos de Villahermosa, Tabasco, was 347.71 pesos. While in Soriana Híper, in Oaxaca, it cost 1015.45 pesos.
