Italy has reported on Friday a record number of coronavirus infections in the country, with more than 144,000 cases reported, according to data published by the Italian Ministry of Health. According to official data collected by DPA, a total of 155 people died this Friday in the transalpine country from causes related to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is one less death compared to the data counted on Thursday. In the middle of last December, the average number of new Covid infections in Italy was below 30,000 per day, but throughout the holiday period the figures have skyrocketed, as has the performance of tests, with more than 1.15 million tests. Following the sharp increase in cases due to the arrival of the omicron variant, the Italian Government decided to take new measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Thus, from next January 10, only people with a complete vaccine schedule or who have recently passed Covid-19 will have access allowed in hotels, conference centers or long-distance transport, among other places. In comparison with a year ago, new infections are significantly higher, although the country was then under confinement, with a death rate that was much higher than today.
