Japan reaches record of daily cases driven by the omniron variant

Japanese health authorities have confirmed this Sunday 554 new daily cases of coronavirus, a new record since the detection for the first time, in November last year, of the omniron variant. The figure exceeds the 534 reported the previous day, and the cumulative total of omicron infections has risen to 695, the Ministry of Health reports in a statement picked up by Japan’s official Kyodo news agency.New cases in the country have continued to rise since more than 500 daily COVID-19 infections were reported for the first time in two months in late December. Likewise, the Japanese capital, Tokyo, has exceeded this Sunday the 80 daily infections of coronavirus for the first time since the beginning of last October, according to the Mayor’s Office of the city, registering 84 new positive cases, double those reported from Saturday to Sunday and the highest figure since October 9. All in all, the country right now is a long way from the peak reached last summer, when it reported 25,000 cases a day. Right now, the pandemic has left more than 1.7 million affected and 18,300 deaths, approximately, throughout the country.
