Molnupiravir treatment against COVID approved in Mexico

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) authorized for emergency use the drug molnupiravir, for the care of patients with mild and moderate COVID, with a high risk of complication.
It is an oral treatment that requires a medical prescription and does not replace the application of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2.

According to the head of Cofepris, Alejandro Svarch Pérez, Mexico is one of the first countries to authorize molnupiravir, although in countries such as the United States and Japan the treatment already has authorization.
“Cofepris determined that this treatment may receive authorization for emergency use under the therapeutic indication: treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 disease in adults with a positive SARS-cov-2 diagnostic test, who do not require supplemental oxygen, for those who have at least one risk factor for developing severe COVID-19 including hospitalization or death, and for whom authorized alternative COVID-19 treatment options are not accessible or clinically accessible. appropriate,” he said.
He also insisted that molnupiravir treatment does not replace licensed COVID-19 vaccines, so it should not be used without medical indication.
