5 suspects arrested in the murder of photojournalist Margarito

On Friday morning, five people were arrested allegedly related to the murder of photojournalist Margarito Martínez Esquivel, national defense secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said.
He explained that in addition to the arrest, a long and a short weapon were secured, as well as various telephone devices and doses of what appears to be crystal and cocaine.

During the morning conference, Sandoval stressed that the weapons secured were a Smith & Wesson pistol and an AR-15 rifle, both manufactured by American armories.
“Within the investigations that are going to be carried out, through the team that is considered in Tijuana, it will be seen if these weapons participated in other crimes and check if these weapons were the ones that were used in the death of journalist Margarito Martínez,” he said.
According to Sandoval, this would be the second case handled by the government, after the progress in the justice process for Lourdes Maldonado.

On January 17, freelance reporter and photographer Margarito Martínez Esquivel was murdered outside his home in the Sánchez Taboada neighborhood, in the city of Tijuana, In Baja California.
Margarito was a contributor to local, national and international media, according to Cadena Noticias, where he worked.
In 2019, The San Diego Union-Tribune highlighted Martinez’s work in covering violence, drugs and migration in Tijuana.
