CDMX Prosecutor’s Office recognizes ‘atypical rebound’ of femicides; van 11 in 2022

The start of 2022 has been particularly violent for women in Mexico City and there has been an “atypical uptick” in femicide cases, acknowledged Ernestina Godoy, Mexico City’s attorney general.
According to the official, of the 11 femicides committed so far this year, five alleged perpetrators have been arrested and seven arrests have also been made for cases from other years.
Among the cases that occurred between January and February is that of sports driver and model Michell Simón, who was found dead in the town of Santo Tomás Ajusco. The body of the 29-year-old woman was found when workers of the capital government put out a fire on the Picacho-Ajusco highway, in the Tlalpan mayor’s office.

This case is in addition to that of Brenda Isela, found dead in her home in Iztapalapa. The authorities reported that the alleged femicide was arrested in Veracruz and has already been transferred to the Oriente Prison.
Another of the most recent cases is the discovery of the body of a young woman on a canoeing track in Xochimilco and that has not yet been identified. For this fact, the capital prosecutor’s office activated the investigation protocol for femicide.
The murder of a 45-year-old woman was also recorded in the Agrícola Oriental neighborhood, in Iztacalco. This week, the prosecutor’s office opened four investigation folders for femicides.

However, the official figures of femicides in Mexico do not reflect the reality of this crime. The way in which the authorities record the incidence of femicide is neither precise nor approved, which makes it difficult to know the real behavior of that crime and its number of victims. In this Hound we tell you more.
Ernestina Godoy said that the five recent arrests are joined by another 17 apprehensions in January and February of possible femicides, who committed the crimes in previous years.
The official said that it went from charging an average of 165 aggressors in 2019 to 221 last year, which means an increase of 34%. Meanwhile, in 2021, 92 people were arrested on charges of femicide, which represents an increase of 171% compared to 2019.
During the monthly report of Advances of the Alert for Violence against Women, the official warned that “no crime will go unpunished.”

Likewise, the head of the prosecutor’s office highlighted the launch of an Atlas of Feminicide, a platform on which information on victims in 2019, 2020 and 2021 can be found, particularly of the places where the murders were committed.
“With this Atlas it is possible to visualize the places where the femicides occurred, depending on the year of the events, age of the victims, relationship between the victim and the perpetrator,” he said.
