UN raises number of Ukrainian refugees to 116,000

Some 116,000 people have fled Ukraine due to Russia’s invasion and attack. To these are added 160,000 internally displaced, while at least 64 civilians have died and about 180 were injured, said this Sunday (27.02.2022) humanitarian agencies of the United Nations.
The main refugee flows have been recorded in neighbouring countries such as Moldova, Romania or Poland. In the latter, border authorities have reported the arrival of some 100,000 Ukrainians, according to data from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
The agency recalled that Ukrainian government sources fear that up to five million people, almost a tenth of the national population, will leave Ukraine due to the Russian attack.
The United Nations Office for Human Rights estimated that the conflict has so far left 240 civilian victims, of whom at least 64 have died, and also denounced that the attacks have damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes.
Others have been cut off or without electricity and water supplies because of the damage the bombings have caused to civilian infrastructure such as roads or bridges, the office said.
For its part, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that UN agencies and their partners have been forced to suspend their operations in Ukraine due to the deterioration of security in the country, although their staff maintain a presence on the ground.
The UN has earmarked an initial $20 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund to fund humanitarian aid in the face of the conflict, and in the coming days will launch an appeal to the international community to provide more funds in this regard.
Humanitarian agencies recall that the current war occurs in a context of pandemic, and in fact in Ukraine during the ten days prior to the attack COVID-19 cases had multiplied by 555% due to the rise of the omniron variant.
The flows of displaced people could increase the risk of contagion and cause a lot of pressure on a health system that already sees its work complicated by the growing number of injured in the conflict, warns the UN.
