The CCE will elect a new leader to seek dialogue with AMLO

The Business Coordinating Council (CCE) will elect a new leader on Wednesday. The candidates are Francisco Cervantes and Bosco de la Vega, from among whom the private sector will select the figure who will serve as its main interlocutor with the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The election in the CCE comes at a time when businessmen and authorities are going through periods of tension, derived from the discontent caused among the private initiative by the president’s electricity reform proposal.
In it, the president proposes to modify the Constitution so that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has priority over individuals in the generation of energy, which the private sector opposes on the grounds that it would affect ongoing projects, scare away investments and slow down the development of the country.

Within this context is that Cervantes and De la Vega seek to assume the leadership of the CCE, to which each wants to inject more force.
In an interview, De la Vega said that his priorities are to strengthen international treaties, urge the authorities to establish clear rules for doing business and engage in a respectful dialogue with the government, in which the “red lines” that businessmen are not willing to cross are defined.
“I am not of the idea of confrontation or subjugation. I pronounce myself for a third way, that this third way be one of respect, accompanying the coincidences to reflect on the differences, but always at the negotiating tables. But we cannot stop that we also need to have red lines, and those red lines make them respect and ask for respect from the government as we respect the government,” he said.

Former president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA), one of the seven associated organizations of the CCE, De la Vega considered that Mexico faces a period of “crisis”. Given this, he assured that the government and businessmen must work together, without the private sector stopping pronouncing against measures with which it does not agree.
“The IP is not opposition, the opposition is the political parties, but the IP as a real counterweight is needed,” he said.

We must have the vision of the future as a country and the social, environmental and relationship responsibility with our government. I share with you an excerpt from my participation in the seminar “Vision of the Future: Mexico 2042” of the @cceoficialmx. pic.twitter.com/tyOClpDvS8

Political Animal he also requested an interview with Cervantes, but could not contact him before the closing of this text.
The businessman was president of the Confederation of Industrial Chambers of the United Mexican States (Concamin), another of the associated organizations of the CCE, and among his promises are to promote the regional development of companies and seek consensus with all levels of government.

The importance of relay
The CCE is the largest private sector body in Mexico. As such, it acts as “the main interlocutor” between businessmen and the government, said Diego Andrade León, a teacher at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (Flacso) and who has studied the relationship between both parties throughout the six-year term.
In an interview, Andrade considered that the leadership of the outgoing president of the CCE, Carlos Salazar, suffered a rapid wear and tear due to the COVID-19 pandemic, since the private initiative expected more actions and government support that he could not get. Then, the tensions derived from the electrical reform arose.
Now, Salazar’s replacement opens an opportunity for the CCE to improve its capacity for dialogue against the López Obrador government, before which the two candidates represent two positions. On the one hand, De la Vega aspires to make the CCE a counterweight. On the other hand, Cervantes seeks consensus and so far is emerging as the favorite because he has obtained the public support of more organizations.
In this regard, Andrade considered that an eventual election of Cervantes would represent a commitment of the CCE to have as its first negotiator a man who has maintained a good relationship with the president.
“It does not seem to me that Francisco Cervantes implies a submission. I think rather that frankly the business sector has had to learn to dialogue with a president who changed the play a little, and that it is better, or asThey see it, having someone who has some accessibility, because they get along very well, Francisco Cervantes and the president. Both have had a very close history,” said the researcher.
This Wednesday, the election of the new president of the CCE will be carried out with the votes of the bodies that make it up. The announcement about the winner will be made at a press conference at 5:00 p.m.
