They ask for tariffs for the import of Ecuadorian shrimp

Sinaloa, Mexico .- Fish farmers are concerned about the Free Trade Agreement with Ecuador, because the commercialization of Ecuadorian shrimp would worsen the conditions in which fishing is currently located, said the federal deputy of Sinaloa, Jesús Fernando García Hernández. In addition to the shortages that fishermen suffer every day, the aquaculture industry is reeling from the possible shrimp trade with Ecuador, because if the doors are opened to this import, it will directly affect the shrimp farms of the region. “They are highly productive in shrimp, they produce it all year round because the climate accommodates them,” said the deputy. Read more: In this month of March the ban for the capture of shrimp in Sinaloa is imposedThe Ecuadorian country grants support to aquaculture producers, since they have more reduced prices, such as diesel, who acquire it at only 6 pesos, while in Mexico the price to fish farmers is direct. “There is no such support here,” garcía Hernández said. This has a direct impact on the price of the product, since Ecuadorian shrimp has a lower price that cannot compete with the price of the national product. “Production and the price situation would fall,” he said. He also mentioned that in Ecuador the health and hygiene measures in aquaculture are not as rigid as in Mexico, so there is a risk of not only importing shrimp, but also the diseases carried by crustaceans.  Faced with this worrying situation, Deputy Fernando García said that the problem has already been exposed in the gallery and before the Fisheries Commission, who will be given the task of holding a meeting with fishermen and fish farmers on March 11 in the port of Mazatlan.Read more: 50 million pesos were approved for coverage: governor of Sinaloa Federal deputy Fernando García Hernández called on the Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, to intervene in this problem and activate sanitary tariffs on the product. “Yes, their intervention is needed, because it is a serious problem,” the official said.
