Women, nature and new horizons: the axes of the last mural of the “Open Borders” circuit in Providencia

Latin American flowers, a female character as a central figure and a light of hope that crosses the image are the protagonist elements of Migrar, the fourth and last mural of the “Open Borders” circuit, the artistic collaboration alliance developed by Lira Arte Público together with Bulleit Bourbon, one of the most awarded brands of American whiskey, to connect urban art with neighborhoods, communities, bars, restaurants and local enterprises in Providencia.
Behind this work is the outstanding national artist Anis, a reference of female art in the public space, who has developed her work in Latin America and part of Europe. With her own personal aesthetic and quickly recognizable, her work reflects on the female figure, the role of women in today’s society and throughout history, expanding her discourse also to the link with the natural from the perspective of care, respect and beauty of the environment.
From Bulleit, which is defined as a frontier whiskey, they explain that this is not a physical place, but a shared purpose between people who seek to overcome their own limits. Inspired by this pioneering spirit, independent culture and street art are movements that the brand drives in the world, giving a place to artists, creators and places that push the boundaries of modern cultural boundaries.
Located on the corner of Avenida Providencia and Obispo Pérez de Espinoza, this mural painting extends over six floors and is equivalent to 102 m², which makes it possible to appreciate it from different points of the sector. Anis’ work joins Rodrigo Estoy’s Horizonte, Alme Yutronic’s La Travesía and Paula Garrido’s Portal; all the interventions are full of symbolism and elements that represent the freedom with which we can move and the roots of what we are and take to each place.
“Opening borders, for me, is about generating new paths, new forms. This mural symbolizes a woman who brings her story from another place. To represent that, I chose Latin American flowers that accompany this feminine presence, appreciating that femininity that has been arriving with the desire to experience the new,” says the artist about her work.
“With Anis we closed a circuit of macromurals in which we worked for months conceptualizing and developing works, along with organizing all the logistics involved in a project of this magnitude. However, from Lira we are aware that this does not end here: now we have to give life to the route, activate the different spaces and advance in what we believe that art can contribute to society, “says Esteban Barrera, director and curator of Lira Arte Público.
These four murals also incorporate an environmental contribution through the intersection between art and sustainability: they are developed with Photio, an innovative Chilean nanotechnology that incorporates an air purifying component into the painting that performs a cleaning similar to the decontaminating action of adult trees. “Migrate” has an action similar to 200 trees, and the complete circuit of “Open Borders” is equivalent to a total of 725 trees purifying the environment.
