Lynching of young man in La Florida: court dictates preventive detention for four accused of the crime of homicide

The Fourteenth Court of Guarantee of Santiago issued this Thursday preventive detention for Geraldo Salas Rubio, Mauricio Meza Arredondo, Jorge Torres Abayai and Manuel Quezada Salazar, accused by the Prosecutor’s Office for the crime of qualified homicide. This, for the lynching of a young man in La Florida, which ended in his death. The crime was perpetrated in the early hours of Wednesday.
In the formalization hearing (case 1.505-2022), Judge Juan Carlos Valdés Peñailillo ordered the entry of Salas Rubio, Meza Arredondo, Torres Abayai and Quezada Salazar to the Santiago I Preventive Detention Center, considering that the freedom of the accused constitutes a danger to the security of society, to the victim’s family and due to the risk of flight. In addition, it set the investigation period at 120 days.

According to the Public Ministry, at about 00:55 hours on Wednesday, the victim Matías Villarino Walther, was running along Tiziano Street, commune of La Florida, where he was intercepted by an undetermined group of residents of the sector, including the four accused.
The group proceeded to repeatedly assault the victim with blows to his feet and knees, in addition to immobilizing him and crushing his thoracic, abdominal and neck area. According to background, he was mistaken for a criminal.
The aggressions of the accused caused the death of the victim, due to a head trauma and asphyxiation by abdominal thoracic compression, according to the autopsy protocol of the Legal Medical Service.
