Cofepris has already authorized vaccination for children under 5 years of age

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) has already authorized that children between five and 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19, although the details of this immunization process will be announced until next Tuesday.
On Thursday, several media outlets revealed this endorsement, although Cofepris did not provide information on the subject. It was not until this Friday that, when questioned about the matter, the Secretary of Health of Mexico City, Oliva López Arellano, confirmed that the institution has already given the green light for that sector to be vaccinated.
During a press conference, López Arellano recalled that children between five and 11 years old should receive a pediatric presentation of the vaccine, a drug that must be purchased by federal authorities.

“We know that Cofepris has already approved the pediatric presentation, but it is not yet available because it is a purchase from the government of Mexico that would have to provide us. So, we are aware of this situation,” the official said.

Hours earlier, also questioned about the authorization of Cofepris, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador only responded that it will be until next Tuesday that details are given on the subject.

With regard to minors, Mexico until now had only authorized vaccination for the sector of 12 to 17 years with comorbidities.
Since immunization began among adults in late 2020 and early 2021, parents and organizations have promoted amparos and held demonstrations to demand that the federal government also vaccinate children and adolescents.
Faced with this, the authorities have responded that the priority was to protect health personnel, teachers and the elderly first.
On February 28, Mexico marked two years since the first case of COVID-19 was detected in the country. To date, there are already more than 5.6 million accumulated cases and 323 thousand people killed.
