Environmentalists and celebrities accept AMLO’s invitation by Tren Maya

Environmentalists, activists, celebrities and others participating in the #SélvameDelTren campaign, which calls for stopping the construction of the Mayan Train – particularly in its Section 5 – accepted the invitation made by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to talk about the issue. However, they asked him to have that dialogue in the affected area.
In the morning, in his daily press conference, López Obrador said he would invite those who promote this campaign to dialogue and to know their arguments to defend the work.
“Yes, I’m going to invite you, to see if we talk (…) to see what their doubts are and I clarify them,” he said.

“Because it is ignorance, that is, it is not bad faith, and I do not think it is that they have been paid, that is, I believe that they believed the destruction,” said the president, referring to those who oppose the project because they consider that it will have a strong environmental impact.
Hours later, those participating in #SélvameDelTren posted a message on Twitter in which they said they were willing to talk.
“We appreciate your interest and your invitation to discuss section 5 of the Mayan Train. As we have pointed out, we have no other interest than the defense of the jungle, the conservation of the Mayan aquifer, its rivers and caves, as well as the best development of the region. We are certain that we agree with you on these ends,” the message reads.

“Come and talk at the construction zone of section 5, with some experts and local communities.”
“Rest assured, it will be a respectful and constructive dialogue. Waiting for you to give us a date, we are left with you,” he concludes.

At the end of March, days after the campaign #SélvameDelTren was announced, President López Obrador dismissed the arguments of the participants and questioned whether they have an environmental vocation.
His call for dialogue issued on Wednesday represents a change of position, as he seeks that his government accelerate the construction of one of its main projects.
