“The Sound of Magic”: What is Netflix’s new Korean series all about?

“The Sound of Magic” is Netflix’s new Korean series, a musical and fantastic drama, with touches of comedy centered on the story of a teenage girl who meets a magician at a seemingly abandoned amusement park. Starring Choi Sung-eun, Hwang In-yeop and Ji Chang-wook, the series presents its characters as “a girl desperate to grow up” and “a wizard with a boy’s soul”, which allows us to take a first look and get an idea of what is coming.

The trailer was already presented by the platform, and there we see that the protagonist suffers bullying at school, which will hold her to a more to the magic of believing in herself and in what she has to give to the world.

As a child, Yoon Ah-yi (Choi Sung-eun) dreamed of becoming a magician. “Now, she’s just a high school student struggling to support herself and her younger sister with part-time jobs, as she doesn’t know where her parents are: her father had to run away from home because of debt collectors and soon after her mother abandoned them. Despite having a bad financial situation, academically it is among the top positions. Ah-yi wants to become an adult as soon as possible to have a stable job,” the synopsis states. The life of the teenager and that of her classmate, Na Il-deung (Hwang In-yeop), will change when they meet Lee-eul (Ji Chang-wook), a mysterious wizard.

The original webtoon: “Annarasumanara”

Created and directed by Kim Seong-yoon, the story adapts in live action format the webtoon, “Annarasumanara”, created by the South Korean artist, Ilkwon Ha. The name refers to the magic word that the protagonist evokes to perform his tricks.

After the success of “The Squid Game”, created and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, which is preparing its second season; this imminent production adds to the original South Korean content for the platform. It premieres on May 6.
