Red and orange alerts in 14 provinces for strong storms

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) published red and orange alerts for strong winds with gusts that can reach 100 kilometers per hour, abundant snow fall and storms of varying intensity in 14 different provinces of Argentina. In this sense, the provinces involved are Buenos Aires, province and city, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Neuquén, Entre Ríos, Mendoza, Catamarca, San Juan, La Rioja, Salta, Tucumán, San Luis and Catamarca.

This phenomenon is caused by a succession of low pressure fronts that have affected much of the country since last Friday. Given this panorama, the SMN announced a red alert for storms in the center of the province of Buenos Aires: General Alvear, General Belgrano, General Paz, Las Flores, Lobos, Monte, Navarro, Roque Pérez and Saladillo, are some of the affected parties. In this sense, when the alert is raised to red it is because “exceptional meteorological phenomena with the potential to cause emergencies or disasters are expected” and its main objective is “to support the decision-making of all sectors of the population”. For its part, the City of Buenos Aires activated the Emergency Response Plan for rains.

“Warnings and alerts provide information for the population to inform or prepare in advance for the meteorological phenomenon,” the agency points out and warns: “Generally, 24, 48 or 72 hours are issued prior to the event. On the other hand, the Very Short Term Warnings (PCA) urge the population to take action quickly, since the phenomenon can occur in less than 3 hours.” Likewise, the SMN, which depends on the Ministry of Defense, explains that the orange alert indicates “Preparate”, because “dangerous meteorological phenomena for society, life, property and the environment” are expected. “The area will be affected by strong or severe storms, which will be accompanied by very intense gusts, strong electrical activity, hail and abundant water fall in short periods,” he adds.
