CPLT will officiate to the Servel after data breach: “It is extremely serious”

The new president of the Council for Transparency, Francisco Leturia, described as “extremely serious” the recent violation of data committed by the Electoral Service (Servel) and indicated that they will officiate the body.
El Servel acknowledged Late Thursday that it mistakenly uploaded a file containing data on about 15 million people. Specifically, the document – as revealed by Ciper and La Tercera – had the RUT, political militancy, belonging to indigenous peoples, and whether or not the individual voted in the 2021 municipal elections.
“It is extremely serious that some of the sensitive information of people, such as their political militancy, is made public, because this can mean discrimination, harassment and persecution,” Leturia said in conversation with La Tercera.
He added that the Council “is going to officiate to the Servel to give us explanations” about the data breach.
“This situation of vulnerability of private data shows the improvements and adjustments that our legal system requires, because with the current legislation these situations could continue to occur without any sanction,” Leturia continued.
Servel has already mandated an investigation into the data breach.
