From letters to fabric: University of O’Higgins pays tribute to Óscar Castro

Twelve painters had the challenge of reading the poet Óscar Castro and capturing in their canvases the stories left by the writer. That happened in 2015 and later they toured the region under the eaves of a FONDART project. That magic came to be installed at the University of O’Higgins (UOH), its first art gallery, in an exhibition that pays tribute to the work of the vate.
The management was in charge of the Directorate of Culture, Heritage and Extension of the UOH, which inaugurated the exhibition “Homage to Óscar Castro Zúñiga. Poeta Rancagüino”, thanks to the pieces donated by the cultural manager Arnaldo Carrasco.
“This initiative was born more than two years ago. We have worked the creation of a gallery for the University, which has dissemination to the regional community and not only rancagüina. We also wanted to open spaces for the visual arts within our House of Studies. And today with great pride we are inaugurating this space of building B of the Rancagua Campus, a versatile place that will allow us to exhibit not only artistic works, but also scientific works, “said Clemencia González, director of Culture, Heritage and Extension UOH.
Donation
Arnaldo Carrasco, doctor, cultural manager and creator of the original exhibition explains that in 2015 “I invited several painters to participate in a FONDART, both local and from other regions. I asked each one to read a book or a poem by Óscar Castro and through their painting they could make a tribute to this great poet. The exhibition was exhibited in the region for more than a year and later I decided to donate it to the University and today we can see it in this beautiful space, “he says.
Among the first visitors, there was a group of students from the Gabriela Mistral school, who developed dynamics around the life and work of the poet Óscar Castro to later know the paintings that honor him and talk about them.
Krishna Rodríguez, a student of the school who was present at the activity, explained that “it is very important to be here, because we do not always have the opportunity to visit a place like this and learn more about Óscar Castro, and know that thanks to his poems we can see these works,” explained the student.
The exhibition “Homage to Óscar Castro Zúñiga. Poeta Rancagüino” will remain open to the public of the region until Wednesday, May 18 and is completely free.
