Time Magazine chooses President Boric among the 100 most influential people of 2022: “It marked a change of direction for the economy of Chile and possibly the world”

Time magazine, of American origin, chose President Gabriel Boric among the 100 most influential people of 2022. The president – who took office on March 11 of this year – was included in the “Leaders” section.
“On March 11, 2022, Gabriel Boric, 36, became the youngest president in the history of Chile, with more votes cast for him than any other president in the history of the country,” says the review of the head of state, made by the American Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize in economics in 2001 and professor at Columbia University.
“The victory of the former student leader represented a changing of the guard, but more importantly, it marked a change of direction for the economy of Chile and possibly the world,” the economist added.
“The night Boric won the primaries, he promised: ‘If Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism, it will also be his grave!’ And that has become the rallying cry of those around the world seeking an alternative to the right-wing economic policies of the past five decades,” Stiglitz added.
In that line, he commented that Boric’s approach combines “fiscal responsibility with a more competitive economy, better social protections and working conditions, equality and social inclusion and environmental protection.”
Finally, he indicated that in the framework of a “divided politics” and in the midst of the constituent process, Boric will need all the skills “that he has already demonstrated: listening and communicating, empathy and a deep understanding of Chilean history and culture.”
“It is making Chile again the social, economic and political laboratory of the world,” Stiglitz concluded in the text.
