“We have always complied with the law”: Sheinbaum to Monreal

Two candidates for Morena’s presidential candidacy had a new disagreement on Tuesday: the head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the leader of the party in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal.
Yesterday, in statements to the media, Monreal called on the candidates mentioned by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador — whom he has referred to as “corcholatas” — to respect the law and avoid promoting themselves before legal times.

“I would recommend to the club of the elect, not to call them the club of the corcholatas, to be very careful with the law. I’m going to be very strict in observing the law and it would look bad if a law-builder despised the law. We must all take care of the law,” the senator said, alluding to officials such as Sheinbaum and foreign affairs secretaries Marcelo Ebrard and interior secretaries Adán Augusto López.
In response, Sheinbaum said Tuesday that Monreal should not worry because she is respectful of the regulations and defends the project of President López Obrador.
“In our case, don’t worry, we have always complied with the law,” he said this morning at a news conference.

“I believe that everyone is responsible for their own actions and their own words, and for each one to be judged. On our side, the most important thing is that we are defending a project above all,” he added.

Unlike Sheinbaum, Ebrard or López, Monreal has not been mentioned by the president among Morena’s candidates for the presidential nomination. For his part, he has already made public his intention to be nominated and proposes that the candidacy be defined with a method other than internal surveys, which he considers unreliable.
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum insists that Mexico is ready for a woman to be president and affirms that in due course she will formally announce her aspirations and if she will separate from the position she occupies.
