From the local to the global, climate and energy actions

On June 17, within the framework of the Forum of the Main Economies on Energy and Climate Action, our president Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented his decalogue of commitments to combat climate change, demonstrating the fact that Mexico is aligned worldwide in terms of affirmative actions to protect the environment and leave better ecological conditions to future generations. In this context, yesterday, Ahome joined the GCoM, which is the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, which is a global network sponsored by the European Economic Community, and which aims to enhance the efforts of local governments around the world to support the transition and creation of resilient cities and low in polluting emissions. In the case of Mexico, we are 92 municipalities who are already adhered to this pact itself that, also yesterday, through videoconference, and with the participation of the ambassador of the European Union in Mexico, Gautier Margot, the coordinator of Strategic and Alternative Projects against Climate Change of the Semarnat, Francisco Tomás Ramírez Méndez, and Jordan Harris, coordinator of the GCoM Americas program, among many other personalities, launched its National Strategy for Climate Change Mitigation in our country. This strategy is the product of a collaborative work between Mexican and international organizations and institutions, which were convened by the National Advisory Committee in Mexico, chaired by the Mexican Association of Municipal Planning Institutes (AMIMP) whose presidency is based in our municipality of Ahome. international by our country. And the main objectives for the next two years are: 1.- Develop the technical capacity of the member cities of the Covenant of Mayors in Mexico and;2.- Improve the degree of implementation of climate actions among the members of the pact. I am convinced that the decisions that we as municipal authorities take today have the potential to guarantee a dignified future to future generations, generating sustainable production processes that allow us to generate competitiveness of our regions and give quality of life to their inhabitants with total respect for our planet. In Ahome, we want to be involved with our president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and our governor, Rubén Rocha Moya, in the creation of a Welfare State and we understand that from the municipal governments we have to do what is in our power so that tod@s in our country have climate justice, leaving no one behind and no one outside. Thus, the Covenant of Mayors of Mexico invites municipal governments to assume a voluntary political commitment to implement actions under three pillars: climate mitigation, climate adaptation and access to energy. Always with the support of an experienced global network such as the GCoM, which already has more than 11,500 cities and more than 140 countries adhered to make a difference from the local for the world. In Ahome, we will disseminate the actions of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy and we will proclaim by example, improving the mobility of our city, reforesting urban and rural areas, promoting the generation of clean energy and, above all, we will embrace our destiny as an industrial pole of development, but with the sign of the times, with a great responsibility towards the environment, with circular economy actions and that help mitigate climate change and ecological deterioration.
