European Union participated in cleaning day at La Rinconada beach in Antofagasta

The ambassador of the European Union (EU) and ambassadors of the EU member states in Chile, together with the environmental organization Parley For The Oceans Chile, government authorities, volunteers from the NGO Ocean Protection and students of Marine Biology from the University of Antofagasta, participated this Thursday in a cleaning day on La Rinconada beach, located in Antofagasta.
The activity, in which they managed to intercept more than 460.3 kilos of waste, was framed within the visit of the EU ambassador to Chile, León de la Torre Krais, and four ambassadors from the EU Member States (Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Romania) in the context of the UExtodoChile initiative, whose objective is to promote the role of the organization as a global actor and approach the regions of Chile.
“This activity was the European Union’s first beach clean-up in Chile and offers a concrete example of the EU-Chile’s common commitment to a plastic-free ocean,” the EU said in a statement.
“The EU fully understands the global relevance of the conservation and protection of marine and ocean ecosystems. In this sense, we share this priority with Chile and we want to actively contribute to the search for solutions that address the problem of plastic garbage in the oceans,” said De la Torre.
The seremi of Environment, Gustavo Riveros, indicated that “this first beach cleaning organized by the European Union in Chile together with students of the Biology career of the University of Antofagasta, tells us about concrete actions to prevent garbage, composed mainly of plastics, from continuing to pollute our beaches and oceans.”
“Days like this allow us to encourage the care of our spaces, education and responsible waste management. We insist on the call to take care of our beaches and to take responsibility for our waste, depositing it in the corresponding containers. In caring for our environment, we are all responsible,” he added.
“Parley’s mission in Chile is to implement a strategy that ranges from Education, Communication, Direct Impact and Redesign, and we are happy to be able to start a collaboration with the European Union to be able to replicate it in different regions of Chile,” said its director, Rodrigo Farías Moreno.
