Alejandra and María Jesús, victims of femicide in Sonora

Sonoran authorities reported on Thursday at least two femicides that occurred in Hermosillo and Cajeme, hours apart.
The first case is that of Arith Alejandra, 25 years old, who was located in Colonia El Sahuaro in Hermosillo.
“The autopsy reveals that she was deprived of her life by suffocation asphyxiation, later causing second- and third-degree burns. His body was located outdoors. We are facing a femicide,” Sonora prosecutor Claudia Indira Contreras Córdova said in a video.

The Prosecutor’s Office itself reported on June 30 the discovery of the body of María Jesús, 19, in Cajeme, after the young woman (who was 18 to 20 weeks pregnant) died from gunshots.
According to state authorities, María Jesús was murdered in the Los Amaneceres neighborhood, where two-caliber weapon casings were also found.
“The femicide registered today in Cajeme, shows us that society, media and institutions have more to do to prevent and eradicate these crimes that harm us as a society. We will spare no effort to find those responsible for the femicide of María Jesús,” the Prosecutor’s Office said.
Although so far this year, in Sonora there have been 49 murders of women, only 7 have been classified as femicides.

In Mexico, 12,897 women have been killed during the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, according to information from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). From December 2018 to April 2022, the authorities registered 3,386 victims of femicide (26.25%) and 9,511 of intentional homicide (73.75%).
